A1 DHABA IS SURE TO BE ON YOUR “ MUST-TRY ” FOOD LIST
BY JEN MCNELLY
NESTLED IN AUSTIN , INDIANA , right off the interstate , A1 Dhaba offers authentic Indian cuisine , captivating locals and visitors alike with its rich flavors and warm hospitality .
Not typically a fan of Indian food , admittingly , I was hesitant to venture out of my comfort zone . However , with over 160 reviews and their 4.9 rating on Google , I had to see for myself what all the hype was about .
Upon stepping into A1 Dhaba , guests are greeted with an aroma of spices that fill the air , setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience . The staff is welcoming and helpful , especially for those unfamiliar with Indian dishes .
I was one of those individuals .
A1 Dhaba features an extensive menu , featuring a plethora of classic dishes , prepared with care and authenticity . From fragrant biryanis to sizzling tandoori delights , each dish is crafted using time-honored recipes . Vegetarian and vegan options abound , ensuring that there ’ s something for everyone to enjoy .
Restaurant owner Onkar Saggu proudly explained that all of the dishes are served using only the freshest of ingredients , nothing frozen or pre-prepared . “ We even cook our naan bread in a clay oven , something you don ’ t typically see in other Indian food restaurants .” They also source all their microgreens from local Sadona Farms in Scottsburg .
Seeking Onkar ’ s guidance , I ordered one of the restaurant ’ s most popular dishes , Butter Chicken , a creamy delicacy that embodies a mouthful of flavors . Mango lassi and naan bread accompanied the meal , allowing for a perfect taste of India .
I was blown away by the flavors of the food . Each ingredient stood out , but also blended together to create a symphony of taste . Any preconceived notion that I had about Indian food had been kicked out the door . I was converted .
The Dish Host Dan Farmer , a huge fan of Indian cuisine , ventured to Austin to feature the restaurant on This is SoIN . “ I couldn ’ t wait to try this place and was not disappointed ,” he said . “ This is some of the best food I ’ ve ever tried .”
Lizzie , one of A1 Dhaba ’ s servers , explained how Austin seemed like a prime location for the restaurant when it opened in 2023 . “ Initially , the owners thought this spot , right off the Austin exit , would be perfect for truck drivers to stop , rest , and eat . That ’ s why they decided to open their business right here .”
Well , the owners were right . It is a perfect spot for not just truck drivers , but anyone seeking an authentic taste of India . With it ’ s tantalizing flavors and warm hospitality , this beloved restaurant invites you to embark on a culinary journey that you won ’ t forget .
